Aug 10, 1923 – Dec 13, 2010
William Harold Ball was born in Victoria, BC on August 10, 1923 to Mr. William Henry Ball and Ellen Ball (nee Baker). Harold had two sisters, Constance Alice Pettersen (nee Smith), and Charlotte Elizabeth Lapp (nee Smith), and one brother, George Ernest Smith, all now deceased. Harold was raised during the era of King George V and Queen Mary and the Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie. He grew up listening to the radio, before the invention of the television, had a party line telephone, walked on wooden sidewalks and watched silent movies. His father was a mechanic and Harold learned one of his many trades from watching his father work. When it came time for the call to duty Harold enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he served as an air frame mechanic from October 23, 1942. He received an honourable discharge on October 29, 1945, during the reign of Prime Minister Sir William Churchill. Many times, Harold would recite some of Churchill’s most famous speeches. After leaving the military, Harold travelled to Chetumal Quintana Roo, Mexico, where he lived and self-learned to speak fluent Spanish. Later he moved to the United States where he was employed with ABCO Hardware and Building Supplies as a manager in Ventura, California until he retired. He then literally drove himself to the state of Georgia and stopped in the small city of Norcross where he lived out his retirement.
Harold’s hobbies were boat racing, wildlife photography, geography, ornithology, golf, and fishing. He would read and recite Williams Shakespeare. His favourite movies were Citizen Kane, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Casablanca, To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Godfather, numerous silent films starring Charlie Chaplin, the African Queen and the Man with One Shoe. He was a friend to the star actor Jonathan Frid of Dark Shadows, and had a varied music collection, including his favourite artists, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, The Andrews Sisters, the Mills Brothers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the Pretenders, the Platters, as well as Bob Dylan.
On December 13, 2010 the life of William Harold Ball expired. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews: Garth Lapp, Diane Lapp, Judy Davies, Janet Sansalone, Lorne Smith, Marla Storie, and Drake Smith, many grand nieces and nephews, and some very close friends from the United States, including his closest friends Keith and Barbara Spencer of Norcross, Georgia.
