In Memorial

Bernard Ezuma Igwe

1942 – 2018

With great sadness we announce that, after a long illness, Bernard Igwe of Kamloops, BC, passed away in Royal Inland Hospital on February 15, 2018.  He was 75 years of age.  Born in Enugu, Nigeria on November 10, 1942, Bernard is survived by his wife Comfort, and by sisters, brothers, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bernard Igwe was a professor of English at Thompson Rivers University.  Prior to coming to TRU, he taught briefly at Simon Fraser University, before joining the then University College of the Cariboo in 1989 as an English instructor.

Bernard served on the board of Kamloops Immigrant Services Agency for so many years and was, at some point, the president of the agency.  He played an active role in the Thompson Rivers University Faculty Association (TRUFA) and was the chief shop steward for TRUFA for eight years, championing the rights of TRUFA members.

Funeral Service for Bernard Igwe will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018 at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Nicola Street, Kamloops.  In place of flowers, if you wish, please make donations in Bernard’s name to New Life Community, Kamloops.

It was the winter of 1991 and we were a class of sarcastic misfits attending an evening English Comp. class with Professor Igwe at the helm. We were the first class to give him a nickname and he graciously allowed us to use it for the entire semester. We all called him Bernie.

Thanks, Bernie. You were a great instructor and I will always remember how much you cared about your students and championed them to do the best work possible.

My deepest sympathy to Bernard’s family on the loss of this fine man. I had the pleasure of working with him on the faculty association of UCC for many years. Bernard was a fierce advocate for those less fortunate, and a tireless worker. He will be missed.
