Aug 3, 1930 – Apr 23, 2010
Late of Clearwater BC, Gerry passed away peacefully at the Dr. Helmcken Memorial Hospital April 23, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Susan; sons Allan (Gayle)and Terry (Donna); grandchildren Jeremy (Katie), Amanda (Kyle) and Kyle, of Langley BC; his sisters Lily (Clarence) of 150 Mile House BC and Lorraine (Davie) of Clearwater BC, as well as many relatives in BC and Saskatchewan. Gerry was predeceased by his wife Anne, brothers, Allan and Melvin of Saskatchewan and sisters May (Stopyra) and Josie (McColl) of Clearwater BC.
Gerry was a self taught man. As a young man, with 2 young sons and a wife to care for, he enrolled in the millwright program. Gerry successfully completed the program and attained his certificate. He then worked as a millwright for MacMillan Bloedel for 30 years. Upon retirement, he moved first to Kamloops, BC, and eventually settled in the Clearwater area. Little league baseball was a passion for Gerry. While living in Whalley, BC, Gerry became involved as a coach and manager for various teams. For many years he was a pivotal member of the executive and served a term as league president. He worked tirelessly for the improvement of the area ball diamonds and in youth baseball. Even after leaving the league, wherever he went, Gerry could be found sitting in the stands, quietly coaching under his breath. Gerry was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. On November 17, 2009, he and Susan got their 4 point buck. On November 30, 2009, the last day for his doe draw, they bagged a nice dry doe. Later in life Gerry also enjoyed attending local rodeos and could be found with his trailer at many of the local campsites near the rodeos.
Special thanks to Bruce and Nora Macdonald, Vegreville, AB, sister Lorraine of Clearwater, and to Olive Anderson of Penticton. BC, for your support while Gerry was in Kelowna Hospital. Special thanks to Betty Harmsworth of Kamloops, Myron and Helen Smith, and to Ed and Joanne Mackenzie. There are too many people to list but you all know who you are. Special thanks to the staff of Dr. Helmcken Memorial and Royal Inland Hospitals, BC Ambulance and the Staff of BC Cancer Society, Southern Interior Rotary Lodge.
